Step into My Office (The woods. The woods are my office.)
Hello Internet! I have decided to jump into the world of blogging again, this time with a brand-spanking-new page! I went ahead and created a totally new blog because this one is going to be pretty different from my past experiences with study abroad blogging. For the past month, I have been working as part of the School Program Staff for a camp, and it's been a pretty incredible experience, and something entirely different from anything that I've had the opportunity to do so far.
As this is my first post, I wanted to give a little insight as to what I'm doing and how this blog is going to work.
What I'm doing
For anyone who has ever worked at a camp, you probably know that there are few parts of job that would be considered "normal" in other workplaces. Someone asked me a couple of weeks ago what my typical day looks like, and I honestly didn't know how to answer the question. Yes, I work with various groups to provide retreat, outdoor education, and team building opportunities, but I also have the opportunity to say things like, "we used the plastic wrap from the pool to make a giant slip-n-slide" or "we had to clean up a giant chocolate milk explosion in the OPC 15 minutes before a group walked in for breakfast." Life is weird, we're all weird, it's a lot of fun. Within this blogging adventure, I am going to try to share all the aspects of camp that I can: the ups, the downs, the sideways, the inside-outs. There are times when I don't sit for more than half an hour on a given day, and times when I have hours to sit in the woods and do nothing and interact with no one. I took this job because it combines so many things that I love and that are important to me: nature, God, education, history, and community. It's a totally unique experience that may be difficult to put into words, but I've got thesaurus.com ready to go and I think I'm up to the challenge.
How this blog thing is going to work
I'll be totally honest with you: I don't know if I can keep this blog going for the next 8 months. The past month has been packed with fun stories and spontaneous adventures, but I recognize that every day/week/month brings a different experience, and those experiences might not be the most blogable things. I decided to start blogging again because I enjoy it, and the moment that blogging is no longer fun, or it becomes a chore, then I am giving myself the freedom to close up shop. I hope that I can take you through my full work journey, but I want you to know right off the bat that I write primarily for me. There will be times when I write epic posts with a dozen paragraphs and pictures, and there will be posts that are just a few sentences or one picture. There may be a month with bi-weekly posts, and then two months where I post less than three times. My blog is fluid because my job is fluid. I hope you will love reading about it as much as I love living it.
Thanks for reading and joining me on this journey!
